Where a love for pixels, video games, and pop culture collide! I'm an Animation Director & Hobby Developer living in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia.
Here’s a small interactive art project from last week!
I’ve been playing around in Javascript for about a year now, and here’s my first attempt at a Ray Cast engine!
My pal Chris Johnston has just started his epic web comic series “ORANGE”, and I’d check it out if I were you!
My web comic Orange starts today, check it out HERE. I’ll be posting twice a week, likely Monday and Thursday, we’ll see how it goes. The early pages I’ve posted here before but new stuff will come soon enough.
Thanks,
Chris.
A really nice writeup over at tumbleOn about my pixel art and Herbert. Thanks Jason!
“Where a love for pixels, video games, and pop culture collide! I’m an Animation Director & Hobby Developer living in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia.” - Caleb Hystad of 8x8pixels
I first learned of Caleb’s 8x8pixels through it8Bit, which features great pixel art from all over the tumblrverse. At the time, Caleb was kicking out a series of cute pixel art interpretations of Doom characters, with a charming recreation of the game’s HUD. That was about a year and a half ago.
In the time since his Doom series, Caleb has published over 100 examples of great pixel art, including pixelated recreations of He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tron, Street Fighter, and many original creations as well. His artwork is simply amazing.
Caleb has also published a series of IOS Games, including Herbert’s Day Out which is an incredible pixelated interactive short story about a pig named Herbert’s adventure from the farm. As you guide Herbert through his story, he travels from farm to mountains, to forest, to rivers, all with an old-days soundtrack that’s simply serene.
Herbert’s Day Out is a game/experience so simple that a 3 year old child could guide Herbert through his story, and yet, my wife and I find ourselves playing through Herbert’s story over and over again. For us, Herbert’s Day Out is like a 21st century zen garden.
Check out Caleb’s artwork on 8x8pixels, download his games, and check out his other creative efforts on his personal website: www.calebhystad.com.

I’m in the process of updating 8x8pixels to my main project site, so look forward to seeing all sorts of my art being posted up here. Thanks for following along, and I hope you don’t mind that it’s not just for pixels anymore!

A new video from DAY 7 of my “Spidersly” development journal ”On the ScreenXY System and Simple Collision Pathfinding”

shrapnel21: How do you develop your iOS games? Do you use an authoring tool? Or a framework? Or is it pure Objective C?
I do have some C experience, but in order to produce something in my spare time I’ve been using GameSalad. It’s has a drag and drop logic system that you can do some cool things with. Perfect platform to practice game design on!
Here’s the first work-in-progress video of “Spidersly” from my development journal. A tiny open-world RPG!
My second independent iPhone game “Charles C. Gull” is now up and FREE on the iPhone App Store! If you have an iDevice go pick it up for nothing, and please give it a review!
